Winter Tango Festival | Music
One of the most beloved aspects of tango, is it's music. It calls the dancer to the dancefloor, it calls the musician to it's intricate layers, and it calls the audience to another world. The Winter Festival brings together a rich mix of live music, internationally acclaimed DJs and excitingly, the milonga debut of Brisbane's own tango orchestra - The Brisbane Tango Orchestra (BTO). Strong of eight accomplished local musicians, BTO will feature at our Gala Milonga (13|08). The venues we have selected have supreme sounds systems and acoustics.

Orquesta
The Orquesta
Following the pilot project in 2021, Brisbane Tango Orquesta (BTO) is a renewed tango orchestra, born from the passion of Brisbane based double bass player Chloe Ann Williamson. The distinctive sound of this eight piece orchestra emanates from the big string section featuring three violins, one cello and a double bass accompanied by flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, and piano. All members of the BTO have years of experience in classical music and tango as part of smaller ensembles (e.g. duos, quartets). The Brisbane tango community is honoured to welcome our own local orchestra for such a memorable event.

DJ Jose
DJ | Bandoneon Musician | Dancer
José grew up in Argentina listening to tango from his parents’ record player. He has been dancing tango for many years, and DJing at milongas organized by himself and friends in Bariloche, Patagonia. His love for tango expands from the music to the dance as he is both a DJ, a musician (bandoneon) and a dancer! He likes to combine these aspects when he can – he established and directed a tango sextet in Argentina and currently plays bandoneon with The Melbourne Tango Orchestra. He has travelled extensively to “encuentros de tangueros” across Argentina to hear the new wave of contemporary tango orchestras reviving the live music tradition, and he loves to throw a few newer tandas in between all the classic orchestras. His personality as a DJ is energetic and at times dramatic, and prefers music that is fun and rich in details. His ultimate goal is to provide a great night for all and to see smiles at the end of the embrace.

DJ Jose will be performing during the Welcome Milonga on Friday August 12th at the Brisbane City Hall.

DJ Wendy
La virtuosa di Brisbane
Wendy enjoys the relaxed Brisbane lifestyle. She fell in love with tango and tango music more than a decade ago after taking her first steps in a class. Now an accomplished follower and a competent leader, Wendy honed her skills in dancing and DJ during her numerous trips to Buenos Aires over the years. Wendy’s strength as a DJ has been to stay conscious of the energy and atmosphere of the event. It permits her to relate to and play for dancers with wide range of experience and skill levels. She realises that in accepting the role of playing the music, you need to set aside your own ego and not use the opportunity to DJ as a vehicle to show off. In playing the music, she hopes to assume control of the energy and success of the event and becomes responsible for the experience of a whole room full of people wanting to dance and enjoy themselves. The aim is to play music the dancers are likely to hear at classic milongas in Buenos Aires and to give them an authentic experience.
