Mercedes Simone was born in Vila Elisa (Buenos Aires) Argentina. She began her career as a tango singer in 1926, accompanied by her husband, the guitar player and singer Pablo Rodriguez. She was also a composer and lyricist. She was known as ‘La Dama del Tango’ (The Lady of Tango).
Mercedes singing ‘Cantando’, recorded in 1931 with the orchestra Adolfo Caribelli. She also wrote the music and lyrics for this tango. You can also see her perform it in the movie ¡Tango! here. Released in 1933, it was the first movie with sound produced in Argentina.
